On May 20 and 21 2025, an international conference -“Biotechnological Innovations for a Sustainable Future” was held in Krakow, organized by the Polish Patent Office as part of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The event brought together experts from across Europe, including representatives of the European Patent Office, national and international intellectual property institutions, the scientific community, public administration, and the private sector. The conference provided a forum for the exchange of experiences and discussion on the role of intellectual property in the development of biotechnological innovations and their importance for sustainable development. Issues related to patent protection, legal regulations, technology transfer, and the challenges faced by patent offices in the face of dynamic technological changes were discussed.
The topics discussed included therapeutic mRNA, new genome editing techniques, cell-cultured meat, and new-generation biomaterials.
The conference was also attended by representatives of the Technology Transfer Center of the University of Gdańsk, Director Katarzyna Gronowska and Deputy Director Tomasz Chyrek.

Biotechnologia to jeden z kluczowych obszarów badawczych Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego, w którym zespół naukowców odnosi liczne sukcesy na arenie międzynarodowej. Wśród wynalazków chronionych patentami polskimi i europejskimi – których proces ochrony koordynuje Centrum Transferu Technologii, znajdują się także innowacje biotechnologiczne, obejmujące m.in.: medycynę, farmację, rolnictwo i ochronę środowiska.
Obecność naszych przedstawicieli na wydarzeniu podkreśla zaangażowanie uczelni w rozwój innowacji oraz systematyczne wspieranie procesu ochrony własności intelektualnej swoich badaczy.
